Understanding Breeding Methods
Understanding the various breeding methods and success rates can help in selecting the most appropriate approach:
Natural Mating
-
Description: Allowing the male and female to mate naturally.
-
Success Rate: Approximately 80–95%.
-
Considerations: Requires compatibility and absence of physical or behavioral barriers, A negative Brucellosis test and a general health screening—including DNA testing—are required to help ensure disease prevention and responsible breeding.
Artificial Insemination (AI)
-
Vaginal Insemination:
-
Description: Semen is deposited into the vaginal canal.
-
Success Rate: Approximately 59–80%.
-
Best For: Situations where natural mating isn't possible, but timing is optimal.
-
Considerations: A negative Brucellosis test and a general health screening—including DNA testing—are required to help ensure disease prevention and responsible breeding.
-
-
Transcervical Insemination (TCI):
-
Description: Semen is deposited directly into the uterus using a catheter.
-
Success Rate: Approximately 70–80%.
-
Best For: When using frozen semen or in cases of mating difficulties.
-
Considerations: This method of artificial insemination is typically performed by a reproductive veterinarian using specialized equipment designed for precision and safety. A negative Brucellosis test and a general health screening—including DNA testing—are required to help ensure disease prevention and responsible breeding.
-
-
Surgical Insemination:
-
Description: Semen is surgically implanted into the uterus.
-
Success Rate: Approximately 70–80%.
-
Considerations: More invasive; typically used when other methods are unsuccessful or not feasible, especially on older females that may require veterinary intervention to conceive.

-
Success Rates by Semen Type:
-
Fresh Semen: Highest success rate, around 80–95%, especially with natural breeding or well-timed AI.
-
Chilled Semen: Moderately high success rate, typically 60–80%, depending on timing and handling.
-
Frozen Semen: Lower success rate, generally 50–70%, best used with Transcervical (TCI) or Surgical Insemination for accuracy.
-
Proper timing and experienced handling are key factors in success with all methods.
